NURS7866 Evidence-Based Teaching Practicum

Pre-requisites:

Course Description: Students integrate knowledge about curriculum design, teaching strategies, and evaluation methods as a student teacher in mentored classroom, clinical, simulation, and/or online environment. Practicum experiences incorporate direct student contact, lesson and evaluation method planning, evaluation of learning outcomes, and self-evaluation.

 

Method of Instruction: Internet Course. UCD used Blackboard e-platform. Students may work as a teaching assistant in a paid or volunteer position during this course. Three academic credits require 135 contact hours of time. Mentored teaching experiences will be provided by the lead teacher/supervisor. Students will develop an instructional unit and integrate innovative and evidence-based teaching methods into teaching experiences with students (e.g., seminar leadership, classroom lecture, online module, simulation teaching, writing tests). Students may be involved in the process of student evaluation such as grading papers or tests, writing exams, debriefing simulation experiences, and/or clinical evaluation of students. Students will reflect on self as a learner.

Other considerations: By the end of this course, the learner will be able to: Develop an instructional unit (e.g., module, clinical conference, classroom lecture, simulation scenario, and/or seminar discussion) using the principles of curriculum design. Integrate innovative and evidence-based teaching methodologies and technologies. Evaluate student learning based on theories, principles, and best-evidence. Employ reflective practice strategies to evaluate self as an emerging nurse educator for the purposes of personal growth and quality improvement. Open to PhD and DNP students.
